Black African American contributions are an essential part of America’s rich cultural heritage. In this special program, vocalist and percussionist Yolanda Bush, guitarist Wyatt Ambrose, and bassist Evan Jagels will pay tribute to many styles originating from African American communities. The program will include country blues from the Mississippi Delta, electric Chicago blues, both early and modern jazz, music of New Orleans and Congo Square, and Rhythm and Blues. Selections from Ida Cox, Nat King Cole, B.B. King, Etta James, Robert Johnson, Herbie Hancock, Aretha Franklin, and T-Bone Walker, as well as original compositions from Yolanda Bush will be presented. This concert is free and open to the public and made possible by the Music Performance Trust Fund, the American Federation of Musicians, and the Cooperstown Art Association. It will also be live-streamed from the MPTF Facebook page. Yolanda Bush has been singing and drumming for over four decades. She is versatile in numerous styles, which include blues, jazz, rock, and R&B as a vocalist and tight, deep, pocket drummer with impeccable meter. She was born and spent her early years on the Southside of Chicago, where she was surrounded by music. She studied trumpet and choral music, and performed with numerous ensembles, including a brief stint with the Chicago Youth Symphony, and numerous theatrical productions. A prolific songwriter, Yolanda has also performed extensively as a solo guitarist and singer. She has toured the U.S., Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, and elsewhere performing with artist such as Gwen Avery, Alexander Belkin and the Road Band, Mark Fox and the Sonic Nomads to mane a few. Her influences include Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Esperanza Spalding, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea, Abbey Lincoln, Joni Mitchell, Stravinsky, Debussy, ad infinitum. WEDNESDAY, March 27 @ 7pm IN THE BALLROOM:
The Music of Carla Bley performed by kill deertrio
Program Information
Killdeer Trio is an instrumental trio co-led by bassist Evan Jagels, drummer Sebastian Green, and guitarist Wyatt Ambrose. Their name comes from the “Killdeer” bird, commonly found in Upstate, NY. While the group is known for playing original music which invites listeners to explore the unknown, they will presenting a special concert honoring the music and legacy of Carla Bley in celebration of Women’s History Month. Bley (1936-2023) was an irrepressibly original composer, arranger, and pianist, an important figure in the free jazz movement, and pioneer in the development of independent artist-owned record labels. Recording over two dozen albums, her music ranged from chamber miniatures to blaring fanfares and was suffused with a slyly subversive attitude. She is widely known for her opera “Escalator over the Hill” and for her book of compositions that have been performed by such artists as Gary Burton, Art Farmer, George Russell, and Paul Bley. This concert is free and open to the public and made possible by the Recording Industry’s Music Performance Trust Fund, the American Federation of Musicians, and the Cooperstown Art Association. It will also be live-streamed from the MPTF Facebook page. |
